DECATUR - Deshon Graves has entered a not guilty plea on weapons charges in Macon County Circuit
Court in connection with the shooting death of 22-year-old ARCARIUS ANDERSON, who was killed
after he aimed a gun at occupants of a car outside a bar, following a Halloween party. Graves, 19,
appeared in court Wednesday for his preliminary hearing. He is being held in jail without bond.
Graves is serving a 24-month probation term for a 2013 conviction for aggravated assault for
threatening a tow truck driver with a firearm. A coroner's inquest into the cause of Anderson's
death was held in another courtroom Wednesday morning. It was ruled a homicide. Decatur police
detective Jeremy Appenzeller testified that there was a party with a very large crowd at Jabroni's
bar, 1816 N. Water St., which spilled out into the parking lots shortly before the bar closed at 2 a.
m. Nov. 1. Shots were fired in the rear parking lot at 1:53 a.m., Appenzeller said. There were
officers on the scene trying to control the crowd. A couple of minutes later, more shots were fired
in another area of the lot, the north side, near the railroad tracks. Police later discovered that
incident was captured on surveillance videotape. Minutes after that shooting occurred the victim,
Anderson, showed up at Decatur Memorial Hospital, suffering from a gunshot wound to his neck. He was
pronounced dead at 2:35 a.m. When police viewed the video surveillance tape, "Anderson is observed
approaching a black Cadillac with a handgun," Appenzeller testified. "He appeared to be ready to fire
the gun." Before he pulled the trigger, a single gunshot erupted from the Cadillac. "We identified
that by the muzzle flash coming out of the vehicle," Appenzeller testified. "Once that happens Mr.
Anderson crouches down, stumbles, stands back up, returns fire and gets back into a vehicle." Nobody
was injured inside the Cadillac. Because of lack of cooperation from others on the scene, the police
don't know who was shooting at whom in the rear parking lot, or if that was connected with this
incident. Macon County Coroner Michael E. Day said Anderson died as a result of a single gunshot
wound to the neck. There was no other trauma. Anderson suffered a tremendous loss of blood. Gavarius
Carney, a 21-year-old parolee who was driving the vehicle that Anderson exited before the shooting,
and returned to for the trip to the hospital, is awaiting trial in jail, facing a felony charge of
obstructing justice. He allegedly lied to police about his involvement in the incident. He is due in
court for a pretrial hearing Jan. 12. Graves is due in court for a pretrial hearing Jan. 6
