Death of a Prominent Man in Nance County Mr. Anderson was a brother of Mrs. H. H. Eyman, of our
city. The good people of Genoa were all startled by the announcement of the death of one of our
foremost citizens on Saturday morning last; that of S. H. Anderson, president of the Genoa State
Bank, one of the solid institutions of Genoa's many business concerns. Mr. Anderson's death was as
sudden to his family as any one. He had been in usual health, seemingly, up to Friday morning, when
Mr. Gus Wilson was called upon to take charge of the bank for this day, Arthur Anderson, the
cashier, being absent in Iowa on business. Mr. Anderson, it seems had no premonition of death, as
his talk all day was that of a man expecting soon to be about his business, and not a man in the
throes of death. A physician was called Friday night, and without warning to the family or friends,
his soul took its flight about midnight. S. H. Anderson was born in Bellville, Illinois, July 11,
1830, and was married to Miss Nancy C. Eyman on March 21, 1854. The newly married couple moved to
Macon county, Illinois in September of the same year and lived on a farm there until the close of
the war. Some time in 1866 they moved to Decatur, Ill., where they lived until '72 and from there
they moved to St. Louis, Mo., where they resided until '76. While in St. Louis, Mr. Anderson was
engaged in the livestock commission business. In 1876 Mr. Anderson moved back to Decatur, where he
continued to reside until '79 when he settled in Coles county, Ill., living there until 1884, when
he settled in Genoa, Nebraska, engaging in the banking business, with which he has been identified
by his constant presence ever since. Whatever the State Bank is as an institution, it is such
largely by the diligence of Mr. Anderson. Of this family, one boy was born who died in infancy; one
daughter, wife of Dr. R. W. Baker, of Peoria, Ill., Mrs. Baker having died four years ago. The third
child, and the only one living, is a son, Mr. Arthur Anderson, now cashier of the bank. Mr.
Anderson was a citizen, a business man of worth, a neighbor, a husband and father of the best type,
and above all a Christian of the most ardent type, consistent and faithful. The funeral sermon was
preached at the home Sunday afternoon, by Rev. Miller followed by a few remarks by Rev. Gardner. The
house was packed by the friends and neighbors of the deceased who were anxious to get a last look at
the man whom they loved and respected in life. The remains of the deceased, accompanied by wife and
son, was taken to Decatur, Ill., Monday, and there laid to rest by the side of the son and daughter
who had gone on before. {NOTE: The daughter is buried in Peoria, Illinois
with her husband.} Long live the memory of Mr. S. H. Anderson in the
hearts of his townsmen.
