Berry H. Cassell died at 4am on Wednesday morning at Cassells Castle at
the head of S. Webster Street. He was in his 83 year of age. His wife Louisa died a year ago. Both
parties died of gangrene of the foot. Mr. Cassell came to Illinois in 1839 from Pa in wagons in
unbroken wilderness. They stopped in what is now known as Central Park. He began as a tinner with a
dollar and a quarter with Captain Allen. He bought and sold several lots, one of them being where
the old Linn & Scruggs corner. He then went into business with Wm Prather, with a hardward and
furnite store but then needed larger quarters moving to where Morehouse & Wells building stood. In
1852 he purchased 240 acres at what is now Wood and Broadway. There was no railroad at that time. In
1856 he bought Herald house where the St. Nicholas Hotel stands and ran the hotel for several years.
During the time he was in the Herald house he had an opportunity to become intimately acquainted
with Lincoln and Douglas. Mr. Cassell could relate to many of the stories told by Lincoln, many not
found in books. Mr. Cassell gave Illinois Central railroad 5 acres to build a depot and he along
with Henry Prather and Wm Martin gave the Wabash 5 acres for depot purposes but the wabash didnt
build so the land went back to Mr. Cassell. Mr. Cassell served clerk of Decatur 1850, treasurer in
1851 and clerk until 1855. In 1846 and in 1848 he was elected to office of recorder. He built a 22
room house in 1887 which was a landmark in Decatur and it was on a hill between the Illinois Central
RR and Hilton Street. It burnt down in 1915. He married Louisa Ann Sholt and they had 3 children,
Thomas A, B. Hilton and Clara. Clara dying in 1887.
