Mr. Dennis was seventy-one years old, having been born Aug. 11, 1840. He has been a resident of
Decatur nearly all of the time since 1856, a few years having been spent in Concordla, Kan., prier
to 1893. At the latter point he was a contractor, street superintendent, and a member of the board
of education. Since his return to Decatur in 1893 he has been retired from business, spending most
of his time looking after his property. He was married in 1866 to Miss Emma Harris at Decatur, and
of their children four survive: Miss Kate R Dennis, Miss Emma Dennis, Ray H. Dennis and Mrs. A. G.
Early, all living in Decatur His wife died March 11, 1902. Three grandchildren are also living.
PROMINENT IN EARLY YEARS.--In earlier years Mr. Dennis was quite prominent. He was alderman,
representing the Fourth ward during the term of Mayor L. L. Haworth in 1879, and during the term of
Mayor H. W. Waggoner in 1880. He was one of the charter members of the Goodman band, being one of
the original fourteen who formed the Decatur Silver band In 186O. He continued as a member of the
band until it had become the Goodman band, ten years later.
IN THE WAR.--He was a member of Co. B, Eighth Illinois Infantry, enlisting from Decatur, and
serving through the war. He was a member of Dunham post, No. 141, O. A. R., for many years. Mr.
Dennis will be remembered by the older generation as a nephew of Samuel Ray, a well known city
officer many years ago. During his many years residence in Illinois, he had become a well-to-do
citizen, with many property interests.
He has been a member of the First Methodist church for the past twenty-five years.
