Wilhelmine "Minnie" Reich, as the story goes, was living in East Prussia, perhaps near Seban. She married a miner there, whose name was Johannes Beume. They had two sons, Karl and Gottfried. Then Johannes up and drowned or had some sort of mining accident and died. To America she came with the little boys, met Adam Stern, who will adopt the boys on the hush if they take his name so he could get them jobs in the mine where he worked. The little boys names were americanized to Charles Martin Stern and Godfrey Stern.
